Gosco M-Class Cryogenic Valves

Gosco M-Class Cryogenic Valves Overview

Gosco M-Class Cryogenic Valves are designed to handle temperatures down to -200°C / -328°F. They have a minimum 12″ bonnet extension to protect the actuator and handle from ice ball build-up, and use our proprietary trim hardening process that doesn’t flake off with temperature fluctuations. Options include: Tripod mounting system, bi-directional sealing or drilled ball, exotic trim alloys, oxygen cleaning, arcuate cut ball and a fully grounded shaft.

Cryogenic Extension

In cryogenic applications, a large ice ball develops around the valve. On a traditional ball valve, the ice ball is often so large, it completely covers the handle or actuator, making it impossible to open/close the valve. Gosco M-Class Cryogenic Valves feature a minimum 12° bonnet extension with a gas pad, that keeps the handle and actuator outside the ice ball. This not only allows you to open/close the valve easily, but it also allows you full access to the packing adjustments.

Bi-Directional Sealing

The Gosco M-Class Cryogenic Valves design has an option for a drilled ball on the upstream side, or a completely bi-directional design that relieves pressure in the body/ball cavity. It doesn’t have a “Preferred Direction” and seals bubble tight in both directions with both a full pressure differential, OR a 1psi differential. Since the seats are live loaded with wave springs, any pressure build-up in the valve cavity, will collapse the spring on the low pressure side, and relieve the pressure in the ball/body cavity.

Exotic Trim

Gosco M-Class Cryogenic Valves can be custom fitted with exotic trim options. Monel trim is a popular option because it is a non sparking metal, making it perfect for oxygen service. In addition to machining the ball out of Monel, we design the ball so that all edges in the ball opening are rounded. This, combined with an arcuate cut ball reduces velocities that can cause explosions in an oxygen line.

Oxygen Cleaning

Oxygen is extremely explosive and even a tiny particle could cause a spark, potentially causing an explosion in the line. Valves in oxygen service must be oxygen cleaned and bagged in order to guarantee that the valve is 100% free of debris. Special facilities and procedures including a positively-charged clean room, approved cleaning solutions, and ultraviolet inspection lighting are available at Gosco Valves if you require oxygen cleaning.

Arcuate Cut Ball

An arcuate cut is a profile in the ball that reduces velocity as the valve opens and closes. When a standard ball valve is in the first and last 10° of opening/closing, velocities are very high (especially in the corners), and erosion occurs. With an arcuate cut, the opening on the ball is almost three times as large. This reduces the velocity by spreading out the flow through a larger opening, which reduces wear on the ball and seats. BORONIZING must be used to harden arcuate cut profiles because HVOF coatings are line of sight and can not evenly coat the ball.

Superior Trim Hardening

BORONIZING is a thermo-chemical surface hardening process that creates a surface layer that’s so hard, it can’t be measured on the Rockwell C Scale. We use Inconel 718 because it is the best overall metal for corrosion, high temperature, and wear resistance. Our PROPRIETARY BORONIZING has a layer depth over 100 microns (0.004”) and a hardness between HV 2500-2700.

Compared to HVOF coatings, BORONIZING is:
Substantially harder, markedly more wear resistant, impervious to corrosion, and is capable of handling huge temperature shocks without spalling or flaking.

Tripod Mounting System

The M-Class Tripod Mount allows you to install the valve in any orientation without supporting the actuator, and we use Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to guarantee it. The very unique design also eliminates actuator misalignment. Three evenly-spaced prongs define a plane, preventing the actuator from rocking. When paired with a CNC machined mounting plate that cannot move left to right or back and forth, the actuator is guaranteed to be aligned correctly. Additionally, the packing can be adjusted without having to remove the actuator, and the three tripod prongs act as a “cold” sink to prevent the seals in the actuator from freezing.

Made To Order

Not all processes are the same, and applications exist where standard valves just don’t cut it. Gosco’s strength is being able to find solutions to problems that other manufacturers simply don’t have the capability to solve. Gosco has a team of specialized engineers, an independent R&D facility, cutting edge design technology and decades of experience in severe service applications. Gosco also have a “Think Outside the Box” philosophy, and a “Say Yes” attitude, so when you need a BESPOKE valve, made exactly to your specifications – you have come to the right company.
